Shining Star

MMsmall1At home and work I have been the shining star for quite a long time. My husband is very unlike other husbands in that after 16 years of marriage he is still head over heels in love with me (seriously in his eyes the sun rises and sets because of me). At my previous job I was well known and well respected. Now I am moving to a new town, I have a new job, and have to start from scratch. You may be asking what is the relationship between how my spouse feels towards me and my performance at work. I would say that there is a huge relationship. My husband’s feelings for me gives me confidence and security. Without his support I do not think I would have been as successful professionally.
I began my new job just a few weeks ago and have only had the opportunity to meet a few individuals thus far. I also needed to attend several conferences during my first few weeks. The first conference was small so it was easy to reach out and make contacts with new individuals. The second conference was a bit different in that there were many individuals there and the people I was there to support were not even recognizable to me. When I entered the conference room for the first time I was overwhelmed, and immediately reached out to my husband to get the strength to even enter the room. I did find comfort after bumping into a few individuals that I knew from the past, and ultimately I was able to make many new connections over the next two days.
To say that my conference experience was humbling was an under statement. Attending this conference did lead me to a new reality, it made me think of something that I did not even consider would happen: I am not the shining start anymore (or at least not yet). The question is does that matter? I am still processing that. I did however realize that how my husband views me made me over confident and I was unable to foresee that the world did not view me in the same light. This experience made me take a step back and gave me a reality check. Additionally, the experience made me realize how lucky I am to have a strong support system at home. Even if I may not be a shining star in other people’s eyes, I am still a star in my husband’s eyes.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:6)
