Children today are very different than the children of yesterday. Today it appears as if all motivation is extrinsic and that there is a lack of personal responsibility amongst our youth. I grew up believing that a person should be good and act responsible because it was the right thing to do not because they would be rewarded for doing so.
I do not understand how our culture has changed so rapidly. Things weren’t like this when I was growing up. I know I am getting older, but I am not that old. What are the causes for these changes? Are the changes in the children’s motivation society’s fault? Are we setting positive examples? When I sit back and think about it I have to say that it is society’s fault that the belief structure of our children has changed.
In society there is a complete lack of personal responsibility. Every time someone gets hurt they are suing someone. Pain seems to equate to dollar signs in today’s world. Although some lawsuits may be justified, there are many that are completely frivolous. These frivolous lawsuits are an example of how there is a lack of personal responsibility amongst us.
Our lack of personal responsibility has now impacted our children. If a child makes a poor decision it is never his/her fault. There is always someone else that is to blame. How can we change this attitude? How will our children be successful with this attitude? How will our society flourish if personal responsibility is lost? I think each of us can make a difference. I am instilling my values in my children to make a change. If each of us works to instill positive core values in our children we will be able to mold the children of tomorrow to become responsible, productive citizens.
