Is the Past The Past?

It is ignorant to walk into a relationship thinking that the past will not impact the present or the future. Before you met your spouse you led two completely separate lives. All of the experiences you had impact who you are today. Some of these experiences have made you stronger, but others may be an Achilles heel. To ignore the past will hurt you and your relationship.
Most people say the past in the past and you need to leave it behind you. Do I believe this is true? I do agree that you need to leave the past behind you; however I believe that you need to leave the situation behind you not the impact. The impact needs to be addressed because if it isn’t it can adversely affect your current relationship. For example, if you are in a relationship when an individual cheated on you may have issues pertaining to trust. If you have issues pertaining to trust remain cognizant of that so that the past does not impact your current actions. Before you talk or act take into consideration that some of your current feelings may be a result of sensitivity because of past relationship. Try to separate the two (the present and past feelings) before you act in your present relationship.
Look at significant situations in the past and learn from them. Reflect on how the experience changed you personally. Remain cognizant of the impact this situation had. Not remaining cognizant of these issues may adversely impact your current relationship.
Let all that you do be done in love (1 Corinthians 16:14).
